Cote d’Azur

“Cote d’Azur” is an artwork across 5 canvases completed in 2015. I wanted to capture a playful, colorful beach scene, showing people from all walks of life and body types, each contributing to the beauty of the whole. I grew up on the beach – even went to an elementary school on the beach – and so this scene is personal to me, remembering the large beach umbrellas of my childhood. The more you look at this piece, the more you will see. My signature is actually an nvd marking I used primarily in my youth on my art. Available in Limited Edition prints and on scarves and more, available at Create.bz.

Named One of 5 Creatives You Should Know

I just received the most FUN email today – I’ve been chosen as one of 5 “Creatives You Should Know” by the Creative Network Blog (sponsored by StudioVox). It’s such an honor – the article is so well written and includes four other wonderful artists. For my part of the article, the author chose to include my new “The Golden Gate” artwork and my fairly recent “Reading on the River Thales” artwork.

The Golden Gate

For “The Golden Gate” artwork I wanted to capture the picturesque San Francisco city scape along with the watery excitement and beauty that surround the famous Golden Gate Bridge.  I lived in San Francisco for a wonderful summer and still visit there with my husband when we get the chance.  The Golden Gate is my most recent work, so to have it chosen to be featured in the article is important to me and very meaningful.

Reading on the River Thales

The “Reading on the River Thales” artwork is my watery tribute to philosopher Thales of Miletus, whose theory was that all things contain water. Thales predates Aristotle (and was admired by Aristotle).   Thales was a true independent thinker and is often considered to be the first to attempt to explain the world around him without reference to mythology.   As a result, Thales is sometimes referred to as the father of science and the first true mathematician.  Since I admire independent thinkers, and Thales was apparently quite a courageous one, this artwork seems like a fun tribute.

Such fun to have both these artworks selected!  Here is a link to this lovely article, and thank you all for your support!

I lived in San Francisco for a wonderful summer and still visit there with my husband when we get the chance. Within a month of its completion, The Golden Gate is one of two artworks highlighted in the “Creatives You Should Know” article on The Creative Network blog that reviewed my artwork and named me as a Creative You Should Know. To have “The Golden Gate” chosen to be featured in the article is important to me and very meaningful. The more you look at this piece, the more you will see. Note, for example, the two sailboats in the foreground. My signature is hidden in the waterm but actually runs the entire span of the bridge, so while it is hidden, it is not small. Available in Limited Edition prints and on scarves and more, available at Create.bz.

In “High Spirits!”

Great news! My latest book “High Spirits!” has just been released on Amazon! If you like the blend of quotes, inspirations and art that you find on this site, I’ve created a book that contains encouragement, inspiration. When I was writing “High Spirits!” I was thinking about all the creatives and entrepreneurs I meet that ask for encouragement, ask me how I keep things together when it’s rough slogging. I know I was smiling by the time I finish each read through of this book – I hope it does the same for you, and THANK YOU again for supporting my creative endeavors! The cover of the book was based on my “High Spirits!” art work:

On the Set

"On the Set" by M. Nicole van Dam

This exciting new artwork, created in 2014, has a secret story within a story. When you look at “On the Set,” the first thing you note is that there is a lot of activity – this is an intentional nod to the hustle and bustle of the entertainment set, where so much goes on behind the scenes. The more you look at this piece, the more you will see. Note, for example, the “Star” – the glamorous lady in pink. The Star actually appears in this artwork three times – in addition to her standing on the stage, you will also see a close up of her emotive face in the viewfinder on one side of the artwork, and her back mirrored in the dresser mirror on the other side of the artwork. You will also see a myriad of lights, cameras and sound equipment. There are also clues as to what the storyline might be about – note the green glistening, sizeable gems around the Star’s neck. These gems were intentionally hued a green color that is the artistic opposite on the color wheel from the very pink of the Star’s dress. Look at the close up of the Star’s face in the viewfinder – is the Star wondering whether the gentleman is a rogue after her jewels, herself, or both? Some of the difficult aspects of creating this work include the difficult-to-achieve multiple lighting effects and the complex stage scene, balancing so much equipment with people having such diverse roles and placement. It was important that the eye be drawn to the center “stage” layer of the artwork, hence the deep red curtain, and yet the “Star” still needed to shine as the Star, which was primarily accomplished through her pink dress and the crown behind her. “On the Set’ is an intriguing new work with Nicole’s Impressionist flair.  Available in Limited Edition prints and on scarves and more, available at Create.bz.
